Vitamins play a crucial role in managing our body’s equilibrium by regulating various bodily functions, such as metabolism, immunity, and cell repair.
There is some veracity to these foundational elements, of course, but does the media tend to over exaggerate certain supplements more than others?
The FDA typically shies away from researching natural remedies, and for good reason; we don’t know how many milligrams of each ingredient are contained within the capsules. This caution is part of the FDA's role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of supplements. (1)
The federal government’s 2020–2025 DGA states, “As foods offer a variety of nutrients and beneficial components for health, nutritional requirements should mainly be fulfilled through foods. … In certain situations, fortified foods and supplements can be beneficial when it’s not feasible to meet nutrient needs through diet alone, such as during particular life stages like pregnancy.” (1)
Multivitamins taken as instructed can fill in temporary deficiencies you may have. It’s always best practice to consult your provider about any medications, including supplements. Providers can order bloodwork to identify any vitamins you may be lacking, then prescribe a more precise dosage, with follow–up blood test monitoring to gauge effectiveness. (1)
